Stanford, Calif. - Stanford improved to 6-9 (5-7 MPSF) with a 3-1 victory over UCSD Thursday night at Burnham Pavilion. Stanford hit .488 as a team led by Kevin Hansen's 56 assists, and solid performances by Ben Reddy and Chris Ahlfeldt with 18 and 17 kills respectively. The Cardinal heads into Saturday's match with Long Beach State riding its first winning streak of the season.

In game one Stanford maintained an early four-point lead before stretching the margin to seven late in the game. The Cardinal never looked back taking a 1-0 lead with the 30-20 victory.

In game two the Tritons opened up with three consecutive points but were quickly countered by a 9-4 run, giving the Cardinal a two point advantage. The two squads traded points until a string of Triton points locked the game 16-16. Stanford answered with two points of its own, keeping the Tritons at arms length. After trading points, Stanford closed out game 30-27 to take a 2-0 lead.

In game three the Tritons opened up an early lead before the Cardinal tied the game 12-12. The teams traded points beyond the 30 point mark with neither team putting two points together until UCSD took advantage of a Stanford error to close the gap to 2-1.

Game four began with a 3-0 Cardinal run prompting an early timeout by the UCSD bench. Stanford turned up the heat, stretching the margin to nine points before closing the match out with a 30-23 win.

In the Cardinal victory freshman Jesse Meredith saw his first action of 2005 recording his first collegiate kills and service aces in route to hitting .308.
