Feb. 25, 2005

Final Stats

Stanford, Calif. - Freshman Liz Tricase captured first place in three events and junior Natalie Foley claimed the all-around title to lead the Stanford women's gymnastics team to a 195.300-191.575 win over No. 21 Arizona State at Burnham Pavilion on Friday evening. It was the first dual meet win since January 28th for the Cardinal, who improve to 2-4 and 2-3 in Pac-10 competition on the season.

The Cardinal started strong on vault, posting a 48.675 score aided by a first place finish from Tricase. The freshman received a 9.875, followed by 9.800 score from Foley. Freshman Stephanie Gentry tied with Arizona State's Cassandra Jusino for third place with a 9.775 score. Stanford began to pull away from the Sun Devils on bars, with Cardinal gymnasts capturing six of the top seven spots. Tricase tied a team-high with a 9.950 to place first, while freshman Tabitha Yim matched her personal season-high with a 9.925 score to finish second. Foley rounded out the top three with her third straight 9.825 score on bars. Sophomore Stacy Sprando posted a personal season-high with a 9.800 to tie for fourth, and was followed by freshmen Lauren Elmore and Alex Pintchouk, who registered scores of 9.725 and 9.700, respectively. The Cardinal posted a team score of 49.225 on bars, and stretched its lead to 97.900-95.750 after two rotations.

After struggling on the balance beam against UCLA last week, the Stanford gymnasts put together several solid routines and recorded a team score of 48.425 on the beam in the third rotation. Leading the way for the Cardinal was Gentry, who received a personal season-high score of 9.800 to capture first place on the beam for the first time in her collegiate career. Elmore and freshman Aimee Precourt helped the Stanford cause by tying for third on the beam with identical 9.725 scores.

The Cardinal rounded out the night with the team's best collective performance in the floor exercise so far this season. Tricase captured first place once again, notching a season-high for the team with a 9.900 score. Gentry scored a 9.800 to tie for third with ASU's Jusino, and Foley finished fifth with a score of 9.775. As a team, the Cardinal scored a 48.975 to set a season-high for the floor exercise and clinch the dual meet victory.

Foley scored a 39.025 to capture the all-around title for the first time this season, and for the first time since last season's Pac-10 Championships. Her mark is the second highest all-around score recorded by a Cardinal gymnast so far this season. Pintchouk finished third in the all-around with a 38.725 score, and Elmore placed fourth with a 38.700 mark.

Jusino was the top all-around finisher for the Sun Devils, finishing second with a 38.950 score. Ashley Kelly finished fifth with a 38.675, followed by April Boone and Kari Muth who placed sixth and seventh with scores of 38.000 and 36.700, respectively.

Lauren Powell highlighted the Arizona State performances on beam, receiving a 9.750 score to place second. Kelly finished second in the floor exercise with a 9.850, while Jusino tied for third with a score of 9.800.

The Cardinal was without junior All-American Glyn Sweets, who did not compete on Friday due to injury.

Stanford is in the midst of its most challenging portion of the 2005 schedule. The Cardinal travel to Utah next Friday to take on the No. 4 Utes, No. 6 Florida, and Cal in a quad meet at the Huntsman Center. The squad returns to The Farm next Sunday to face Alabama in a dual meet at Maples Pavilion, matching up the two teams that tied for third at last season's NCAA Super Six.
