Stanford, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford (10-0) handed No. 12 USC (6-1) its first loss of the season this afternoon, as the Cardinal won its 39th-straight match with a 5-2 victory over the Trojans.
The Cardinal rebounded from yesterday's loss in doubles, earning the point with an 8-3 win from 10th-ranked Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette on court one and a 9-7 win at the third spot from freshmen Whitney Deason and Lejla Hodzic.
In singles, the Cardinal won four matches to secure the team's tenth win of the year. Reigning NCAA singles champion, Liu, posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over ninth-ranked Nicole Leimbach at the No. 1 spot, while Deason posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over No. 87 Dianne Matias at the No. 4 position. The Cardinal also earned hard-fought wins from Theresa Logar (6-2, 7-6) and Lejla Hodzic (6-1, 7-5). Senior All-American Erin Burdette dropped her match to No. 17 Lindsey Nelson, as the pair split the first two sets and then Nelson scored a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker, as the Cardinal had already secured the win before they began third-set play.
Next weekend, Stanford will be on the road to face off against No. 49 Arizona and No. 37 Arizona State on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The matches are set to being at 1:30 in Tucson and 12-noon in Tempe.
