Ian Dobson Wins NCAA Indoor 5,000 Meter Title

March 12, 2005

Fayetteville, Ar - Ian Dobson is the 2005 NCAA indoor 5,000 meter champion.

Dobson fought off the challenge of Arizona's Robert Cheseret to win the national title on Friday night at the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Arkansas.

Dobson ran the distance in a time of 13:43.36. Last year at the NCAA Indoors, Dobson placed second. Cheseret was timed in 13:44.57 while Chris Solinsky of Wisconsin was third at 13:45.34.

Dobson becomes the first Stanford runner since Brad Hauser in 1999 to win the national title in the indoor 5,000 meters. Hauser also won the title in 1998.

Alicia Craig won her third All-America honor in the indoor 5,000 meters on Friday. Craig ran the distance in 16:00.07. In all, Craig has now won ten All-American (indoor and outdoor track, cross country) honors in NCAA competition. Ida Nilsson of Northern Arizona won the race in a time of 15:50.20.

The women's distance medley relay team of Katy Trotter, Christine Moschella, Chinny Offor and Sara Bei placed third in a time of 11:08.81. Michigan won with a time of 11:08.24 followed by Villanova at 11:08.76.

The men's distance medley relay final was also held Friday night but as of 12:07 a.m. (3/12/05, 12:08 a.m., pt) no results were available other than Michigan was awarded the win after Arkansas (which had originally finished first at 9:30.79) was disqualified when Michigan filed a protest that an Arkansas runner had impeded the progress of a Michigan runner. The meet referee agreed with the Michigan protest and thus Arkansas was disqualified. Michigan was timed in 9:30.82.

Erica McLain, a freshman, gained her first All-America accolade in the long jump with an effort of 20-5 1/4 (6.23m) to finish eighth. Tianna Madison of Tennessee won the competition at 22-3 (6.78m).

McLain will compete in the triple jump on Saturday. McLain is the overwhelming favorite to win the competition.

Arianna Lambie produced the fourth-best time in the women's mile prelims at 4:45.15. Lambie advanced to Saturday's final. Lindsey Gallo of Michigan had the day's best time at 4:44.66.

After the first day of competition, the Cardinal women were in fourth place with 12 points. Tennessee leads the competition with 21 points. The Stanford men are also in fourth place with 15 points. Oregon leads with 20 points.
