Stanford, Calif. - Stanford, ranked No. 10 in the country, registered an upset win over rival Cal on Sunday, defeating the Bears by a score of 222.675-219.775 at Maples Pavilion. Stanford was led freshmen David Sender and Sho Nakamori, who combined to place first in three different events.
The Cardinal started the afternoon off on a strong note, as Sender registered a team-high 9.600 on the floor exercise. Cal's Shawn Mowry placed first on floor, receiving a 9.650 to edge Sender for the top spot.
Stanford was led by Nakamori and sophomore Brice Rolston on the pommel horse, as the duo tied for first place in the event with identical 9.45 scores.
Sophomore Alex Schorsch captured first place on rings, scoring a 9.600 to edge teammates Peter Derman and Sender, who tied with Cal's Tyler Block for second with a 9.550.
The Cardinal continued their strong performance on vault and parallel bars as coach Thom Glielmi's freshmen took first place in both events. Sender snagged the vault title with a 9.650, while Nakamori placed first on the p-bars with a 9.350.
Nakamori was also impressive on the high bar, receiving a 9.500 score to finish second to Cal's Colin Christ, who tallied a 9.550.
Sunday's meet marked the final home meet for Cardinal seniors Kelly Lang, Daniel Torres-Rangel, and Ambert Yeung, who were honored in a pre-meet ceremony.
The Cardinal will compete at the MPSF championships in Norman, Oklahoma on March 25-26.
