Stanford, Calif. - Michael Taylor (4-4, 3 RBI) hit for the cycle and tied a career-high four hits to lead No. 24 Stanford (21-14) to an 8-2 victory over San Jose State (20-15-1) in a non-conference game and the first meeting between the South Bay rivals at Sunken Diamond on Tuesday. Taylor became the first Stanford player to hit for the cycle since Edmund Muth pulled it off at UCLA on February 22, 1998.
Taylor hit his first collegiate homer in his first at bat to lead off the second inning with a towering shot over the right field fence. In his second at bat to lead off the fourth, he tripled to the gap in leftcenter field. In the fifth, he had an RBI double to score John Hester and his line drive single in his final at bat in the eighth was just beyond the reach of San Jose State first baseman Brandon Fromm.
"I have to admit that hitting for the cycle definitely crossed my mind," said Taylor when asked about his last at bat. "But, I wasn't going up there just trying to get a single."
"You can play for a long time and not hit for the cycle," said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess. "That's a pretty nice accomplishment, and it was quite a night for him."
Taylor's home run was one of a season-high four hit by the Cardinal as John Mayberry, Jr., Brendan Domaracki and Jed Lowrie also went deep. Mayberry and Domaracki had two-run shots in the third and the fourth innings, while Lowrie's solo shot increased his team-high season total to 11.
Stanford resumes Pac-10 action by hosting Washington in a three-game series this Friday-Sunday, April 22-24 (6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PT). Friday night's opener is scheduled to be televised live by FOX Sports Net on a tape-delayed basis with broadcasts scheduled for Sunday, April 24 (11 am, PT) and Monday, April 25 (12 pm, PT).
