Newberry, Svitek, Bergeron Selected in NFL Draft

April 24, 2005

Three more members of the 2004 Cardinal were selected in day two of the NFL Draft. Jared Newberry was taken in the sixth round by the Washington Redskins; Will Svitek went to the Kansas City Chiefs in the sixth round and David Bergeron was taken by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round.

Stanford had six players taken in the draft, which ties a school record for the most players taken in a seven-round draft. The Cardinal also had six players in the 2002 Draft. There have been other years in which six Stanford players were taken, but only the 2002 Draft had all six taken in the first seven rounds,.

Yesterday, Stanford had three players taken in the third round: S Oshiomogho Atogwe to the St. Louis Rams, TE Alex Smith to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and CB Stanley Wilson to the Detroit Lions.

Newberry came to Stanford as a walk-on from Minneapolis. He was taken with the ninth pick of the sixth round - the 183rd player taken overall. During his five seasons on The Farm, he played fullback, outside linebacker and inside linebacker. By this third year (2002), he wound up starting three games at OLB. He started all 22 games the past two seasons and was one of the team's most valuable defensive players.

Newberry was second on the team in tackles in 2003 with 67. Last season, he had 44 tackles and was second on the team with 8.5 tackles for loss. He was named one of the team's co-captains along with Atogwe.

Svitek was selected by the Chiefs with the 13th pick of the sixth round - the 187th overall. A native of Newberry Park, California, Svitek was a four-year letter-winner as a defensive end and tackle. But, at 6-7, 286, he is projected to be an offensive tackle for the Chiefs. Svitek was a fixture on the Cardinal's defensive front from 2001-04. He also spent some time on the Cardinal track team as a thrower.

Bergeron started 31 games for Stanford as a three-year starter at inside linebacker from '02-04. He was taken in the seventh and final round, the 252nd overall pick. He was second on the team this past season with 71 tackles.
