Freshman Erica McLain Sets School Record In Victory At Penn Relays

April 29, 2005

Philadelphia, Pa - Stanford freshman sensation Erica McLain easily broke the longtime school record in winning the triple jump on Friday at the Penn Relays.

McLain set the new record with a leap of 43-9 1/4 (13.34m). Gisele Oliveira of Clemson finished second at 43-5 1/4 (13.24m). The old record was 43-4 1/2 (13.22m) by Jackie Edwards in 1992.

McClain had earlier this year jumped 44-4 (13.51m) at the Texas Relays (4/9/05) but that effort was not considered a school record because it was wind-aided. Last week at The Big Meet (4/23/05), McLain jumped a previous career-best 42-9 (113.03m).

During the indoor season, McLain broke the school record with an effort 45-7 1/4 (13.90m). McLain finished second at the NCAA Indoor Championships to earn All-American honors.

Stanford also scored a victory in the women's 4 x 1,500 meter relay championship. The team of Katy Trotter (4:25.1), Amanda Trotter (4:31.3), Sara Bei (4:22.4) and Arianna Lambie (4:19.2) raced to a combined time of 17:38.16. Villanova finished second (17:42.13).
