Stanford, Ca - Ian Dobson ran the fastest 10,000 meters by an American this year with a school record time of 27:59.72 on Sunday night at the Cardinal Invitational at Cobb Track & Angell Field.
Dobson beat his previous best of 28:15.66 and beat the school record of 28:08.12 by Brad Hauser in 1999. Dobson was one of nine runners who beat the meet record of 28:16.60 by Hauser in 1998. Takayuki Matsumiya of Konica Minolta won the race in a meet record time of 27:50.20.
Donald Sage, the two-time NCAA champion in the 1,500 meters, ran a season-best 3:41.62 to win his event. Sage battled back from fourth place in the final lap to win the event over Ismail Ahmed of Nike Oregon who ran a 3:41.97 to finish second.
Sage was one of several Stanford athletes to win their event. Jakki Bailey won the women's 100 meters with a career-best time of 11.89. Bailey's time was eighth-best in school history. Melissa Yunghans recorded a career-best in the shot put (52-4 3/4, 15.97m, #4 all-time at Stanford) which is also an NCAA regional qualifying mark. Keith Avila recorded a career-best throw of 194-11 (59.41m) in the javelin. Avila's toss was sixth-best in school history. Bryan Kelley had a throw of 191-2 (58.26m) in the javelin, his career-best and seventh-best in school history. Michael Robertson won the discus with a toss of 198-0 (60.36m). Other Stanford winners were Nick Sebes in the 400 meters (47.45), Ashley Purnell in the 400 meters (55.64), Deborah Akinniyi in the 100 meter hurdles (14.40) and the triple jump (39-3 3/4,11.98m), and Undine Becker in the 400 meter hurdles (59.67) and the long jump (19-7, 5.97m). Graeme Hoste gained entrance to the NCAA Regionals with a mark of 16-6 3/4 (5.05m) in the pole vault. Lindsay Flacks ran the 5,000 meters in 16:48.08, an NCAA regional time. Another regional qualifying time was turned by Undine Becker in the 400 meter hurdles (59.67).
In other action that featured several Olympians and elite athletes, Lisa Galaviz, a former standout at Arizona State, ran the fastest women's 3,000 meter steeplechase in the world this year with a time of 9:50.93. Amy Rudolph ran the fourth fastest time ever by American in the 10,000 meters with a winning time of 31:18.96. Nine runners bettered the meet record. Amy Yoder-Begley ran the fastest time by an American this year in the 5,000 meters with a second place finish (15:34.01). Marie Davenport of Ireland won the race in a meet record time of 15:32.74. Abdi Abdirahman set a meet record with a time of 13:28.57 in the 5,000 meters. Another meet record was turned in by Achraf Tadili in the 800 meters (1:46.59), Mircea Bogdan in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (8:32.68) and Katie Vermeulen in the women's 1,500 meters (4:10.25),
