Santa Clara, Calif. - Eric Newton's RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning brought home David Hoffmire with the game-winning run to give Santa Clara (25-24) a 6-5 upset win over No. 21 Stanford (27-18) on Tuesday in a 12-inning non-conference game at Stephen Schott Stadium that lasted four hours and 16 minutes. Hoffmire started Santa Clara's winning 12th inning rally with a one-out single and moved to second on a wild pitch, prompting Stanford to intentionally walk Kris Watts before Newton came up with his game-winning RBI single.
The contest had been tied 3-3 in the top of the 10th inning when Michael Taylor gave the Cardinal a short-lived 5-3 lead when he blasted a two-run homer with John Mayberry, Jr., who had singled with one out, on first base.
Santa Clara extended the game in the bottom of the 10th frame with two runs off Stanford closer Matt Manship (3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 SO). Jason Matteucci started the rally with a leadoff single but Manship struck out pinch-hitter Carl Bacon for the first out. Dustin Realini followed with a single before the runners moved to second and third on a balk. Watts then drew a walk to load the bases but Manship struck out Newton to put the Cardinal within an out of victory before walking Nathan Faulkner to force in a run. On the next play, Ryan Chiarelli hit a groundball deep in the hole between shortstop and third base that Cardinal shortstop Chris Minaker fielded and threw too late to Jed Lowrie covering second base for an RBI fielders choice that tied the game. Watts tried to come all the way around from second base on the play but was caught in a rundown between third and home for the final out of the inning.
Realini (3-5, SB) and Watts (2-3, HR, 2 RBI) had multiple-hit games for Santa Clara.
Santa Clara reliever Anthony Rea (4-5) picked up the win by holding the Cardinal scoreless without a hit, while striking out one and walking one over the final 2.0 innings. Starter Adam Sanabria (3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER), Scott Lonergan (1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 SO), Thomas Van Buskirk (1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) and Patrick Overholt (4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO) also saw action for the Broncos.
Jed Lowrie (2-6, 2 2B) and Chris Lewis (2-6, 2B) joined Taylor with multiple-hit games for Stanford.
Stanford reliever Jeff Stimpson (0-2) took the loss, giving up the game-winning run in 1.1 frames as he allowed two hits while striking out one and walking one. Starter Greg Reynolds (3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO), Erik Davis (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB), Nolan Gallagher (3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 SO) also pitched for the Cardinal.
Stanford jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Taylor started the rally with a leadoff double, stole third and scored when Minaker's pop-up just beyond the infield dirt was dropped by Newton at second base. Lewis followed with a double to put runners on second and third before pinch-hitter Ryan Seawell's sacrifice fly brought Minaker home with the second run of the inning. Jeff Boes then capped the Cardinal rally with an RBI single to plate Lewis.
Santa Clara got one run back in the bottom of the third when Chiarelli drew a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI groundout from Shawn Epidendio.
The Broncos tied the score in the fourth on a two-run shot by Watts over the rightcenter field wall. Realini had singled with one out in front of Watts.
Neither team would score again until Taylor's two-run shot in the tenth but both squads had several opportunities, leaving runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth innings. The squads combined to leave a total of 23 runners on base in the contest with Santa Clara stranding 12 and Stanford leaving 11 on base.
Stanford returns home to Sunken Diamond for a three-game Pac-10 series against UCLA from Friday-Sunday, May 13-15 (6, 1, 1 pm, PT) to begin a seven-game homestand that will conclude the Stanford's 2005 regular season home schedule. The Cardinal will also host Saint Mary's (Tuesday, May 17, 6 pm, PT) and Arizona (Friday-Sunday, May 20-22, 6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PT) on the homestand.
Stanford will host several promotions during its upcoming seven-game homestand, beginning with Youth Baseball Day and a post-game Poster-Autograph Session on Sunday, May 15. The club's final home series versus Arizona will have a promotional event each day, starting with the popular Town & Country Fireworks Show after the series-opener on Friday, May 20. The annual Team Appreciation BBQ will take place after Saturday's contest with Fan Appreciation/Senior Day slated for Sunday.
