Stanford, Calif. -- Oregon defeated Fresno State, 4-2, in the First Round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship this afternoon at the Taube Tennis Center on the Stanford University campus. Oregon took the early 1-0 lead as the Ducks won two doubles matches. In singles play, Oregon added three wins on courts one, two and four to secure the victory and advance to the second round of competition tomorrow against the winner of Stanford and Army.
Oregon duo Anna Leksinska and Jamie Marshall scored an 8-4 win on court two over Lucia Tallo and Jacqui Haskett, but the Bulldogs followed quickly with an 8-4 victory on court one as Lucia Sainz and Courtney Jantz defeated the Ducks' Daria Panova and Dominka Dieskova. With the doubles point on the line, all eyese turned to court three, where Oregon's Davina Mendiburu and Ester Bak were tied with Fresno's Katharina Winterhalter and Fadzai Masiyazi. After locking up at 5-5, the Ducks won two straight to take a 7-5 lead. The Bulldogs held serve in the next game, but Mendiburu and Bak held on for took the 8-6 win.
In singles, Oregon scored the first victory as Marshall posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory on court four. Frenso State tied the match score at 2-2, as Sainz and Haskett picked up 6-3, 6-2 wins on courts three and five, respectively. Oregon's Panova gave the Ducks a boost, as she won her first-set tiebreaker and added a 6-3 second set to win on court one. With Masiyazi and Bak in the third set on court six, Dieskova had the opportunity to secure the Oregon win on court two. Up by one set and tied at 4-4 in the second, Dieskova won back-to-back games for the 6-4, 6-4 match-clinching win.
Oregon will play again at noon tomorrow against the winner of this afternoon's Stanford-Army match-up.
