Stanford, Calif. - Top-seeded Stanford improved to 22-0 on the season this afternoon with a 4-0 win over Army in the First Round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship at the Taube Tennis Center on the Stanford University campus. The Cardinal will take on Oregon in the Second Round tomorrow at noon.
Stanford took the early 1-0 lead with a pair of wins in doubles play. All-Americans Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette played at the No. 2 spot and posted the first win of the day with an 8-1 victory over Army's Megan Noble and Christine Ong. Whitney Deason and Theresa Logar picked up the second win to clinch the doubles point for Stanford, as the duo scored an 8-2 victory over Amanda Paluch and Pam Chavez. On court one, Amber Liu and Anne Yelsey were leading Marissa Limsiaco and Amy Morgenstern when the match was called.
Stanford only needed three wins to down the Black Knights in singles, and the Cardinal earned them quickly. Yelsey posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Lyndsey Nott on court six and Logar followed with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Noble on court four, and Liu added a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Limsiaco moments later to secure the Stanford victory. The other three matches were not finished.
Stanford will host Oregon in the second round tomorrow, after the Ducks defeated Fresno State, 4-2, earlier today. The winner of tomorrow's second-round match will head to Athens, Ga., for the NCAA Championship Round of 16.
