Walnut Creek, Calif. - Stanford Baseball players Jeff Gilmore, Jed Lowrie and John Mayberry, Jr. were selected to the 2005 All-Pac-10 Team announced by Pacific-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen on Tuesday. Lowrie and Mayberry both earned spots on the team for the second year in a row, while Gilmore's honor was his first. John Hester, Mark Romanczuk and Adam Sorgi picked up honorable mention All-Pac-10 status.
Gilmore leads the team in wins (10-2, #3T Pac-10), innings pitched (111.1, #1 Pac-10) and complete games (3), while posting a 3.56 ERA (#9 Pac-10) and a .253 opponents' batting average (#10 Pac-10) that both rank as the lowest among Stanford pitchers that have pitched at least one inning per team game played. He also co-leads the team in starts (16, #4T Pac-10), while ranking second in strikeouts (76). In addition, he ranks tied for seventh on Stanford's career won-lost percentage with a 20-4 (.833) all-time record.
Lowrie, the 2004 Pac-10 Player of the Year, has already been chosen as a First Team All-American by Sports Weekly for the second consecutive season in 2005 and was also selected as a Second Team Midseason All-American at second base by Baseball America. He leads Stanford in homers (12, #6 Pac-10), RBI (62, #3T Pac-10, #29T NCAA), batting average (.324), slugging percentage (.594, #7 Pac-10), total bases (123, #10T), sacrifice flies (10, #1 Pac-10), walks (39, #4 Pac-10) and multiple-RBI games (18).
Mayberry paces the team in multiple-hit games (22), while ranking second in RBI (48, #8T Pac-10), doubles (17, #7T Pac-10) and multiple-RBI contests (13), as well as tied for second in homers (6). He has made just two errors in 528 defensive chances (#4 Pac-10) for a .996 fielding percentage (#7 Pac-10) while starting all 55 games and playing every inning at first base. He also leads the team in putouts (496, #2 Pac-10) and fielding double plays (448, #3 Pac-10).
Hester has started 54 of the team's 55 games behind the plate this season and played every inning in each of those 54 starts. He is third on the team with 41 RBI and tied for fourth with five homers, while adding a .282 batting average, 12 doubles, a triple and six stolen bases. Defensively, he ranks second on the team in defensive chances (383, #10 Pac-10) and has allowed just four passed balls, tied for the least among any Pac-10 catcher that qualifies for the conference statistical leaders
Romanczuk is third on the team in victories with a 5-6 record on the season while posting a 4.33 ERA. He also leads the team in strikeouts (81, #9 Pac-10), while co-leading the squad in starts (16, #4T Pac-10), and ranking second on the club in innings pitched (104.0 IP, #7 Pac-10) and complete games (2). Romanczuk won 28 career games at Stanford to rank tied for sixth on the school's all-time list with Brian Mignano (1979-82) and moved into ninth on Stanford's all-time list for innings pitched (325.0) in his most recent start. He has been named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week six times in his career.
Sorgi paces the team in hits (71), runs scored (51) and triples (3), while ranking second in batting average (.320) and sacrifice flies (7, #2T Pac-10) and multiple-hit games (19), adding five homers and 36 RBI.
Stanford (32-23) will begin the 2005 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship by traveling to a regional hosted by Baylor (Waco, Tex.) this Friday-Monday, June 3-6. The Cardinal is seeded third in the regional and will play No. 2 seed Texas Christian (40-18) in its first postseason game on Friday (2 pm, CT/12 pm, PT). Host Baylor (39-21), the top seed in the regional and the No. 4 national seed, will also open regional play on Friday (7 pm, CT/5 pm, PT) versus fourth-seeded Texas-San Antonio (27-32). The regional will continue on Saturday with the losers of Friday's contests playing an elimination game (Game 3) at 2 pm, CT/12 pm, PT. Friday's winners will matchup in a winners' bracket game (Game 4) at 7 pm, CT/5 pm, PT.
The Game 3 winner and Game 4 loser will play an elimination contest (Game 5) on Sunday at 2 pm, CT/12 pm, PT.
The first championship game will pit the Game 4 and Game 5 winners on Sunday at 7 pm, CT/5 pm, PT. A second championship game (Game 7), if necessary, will be played on Monday, June 6 (6 pm, CT/4 pm, PT). The second championship contest would be necessary if the winner of Game 5 defeats the winner of Game 4 in the first championship game.
The winner of the Waco regional will advance to a super regional versus the winner of a regional being hosted by Clemson (Clemson, S.C.). The Clemson regional features the host Tigers (39-21), along with College of Charleston (47-13), Oral Roberts (40-18) and North Carolina A&T (27-25).
Eight super regionals consisting of 16 regional winners will be held from Friday, June 10 - Monday, May 13. Super regional hosts along with specific dates and times will be announced on the ESPN Bottom Line on Tuesday, June 7 (9 am, PT).
Super regional winners will make up the eight-team field for the 59th College World Series to be held Friday, June 17 - Monday, June 27, at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska.
Arizona's Trevor Crowe and Oregon State's Jacoby Ellsbury were named Co-Pac-10 Players of the Year, while USC's Ian Kennedy picked up Pitcher of the Year honors. Oregon State's Darwin Barney was the Freshman of the Year, while Oregon State's Pat Casey earned Coach of the Year honors.
