Stanford, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Stanford softball team dropped a 1-0 nine inning game to sixth-ranked Oregon State this afternoon at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal are now 38-12, 11-6 in the Pac-10 while the Beavers improve to 40-1-, 13-4 in league action.
It was a pitcher's dual for eight innings as Stanford's Becky McCullough and OSU's Brianne McGowan kept the hitters in check.
In the top of the ninth, Beaver Adrienne Alo hit a line drive homerun to centerfield, giving Oregon State the 1-0 lead.
Meghan Sickler went 2-for-3 for Stanford, including two doubles, while teammate Jackie Rinehart had a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Lauren Lappin picked up the other hit for the Cardinal.
Becky McCullough (17-4) took the loss in the circle for Stanford, allowing one run on six hits over nine innings of work with four strikeouts. Brianne McGowan (33-5) picked up the win for OSU, scattering five hits over nine scoreless innings with nine strikeouts.
The two teams meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out the weekend.
