Stanford Drops Game To Delaware, 5-1

Stanford, Calif. - The Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens scored three goals in the first half en route to a 5-1 victory over the Cardinal. Casey Howard contributed two early goals for the Blue Hens, with a score at 6:04 off of a pass from Nikki Hinsley and on an unassisted tally at 12:07. Kaili Kao scored Delaware's other first half goal on an assist by Katie Evans at 23:40. The Blue Hens out shot the Cardinal, 9-1, in the first half.

Bailey Richardson scored at 57:12 on one of Stanford's four penalty corners, assisted by Missy Haliday and Julie Drewes. Stanford out-shot Delaware 9-5 in the second half, led by forward Jess Zutz with three shots. For the game, Delaware held a slim 14-10 advantage, including a game-high four shots from Howard.

"We came out very timid as a team (in the first half)," said head coach Lesley Irvine. "We definitely picked it up in the second half. They're beginning to settle in around each other. It's still only our second game of the season, and we're still learning."

Stanford combined for five saves. Madison Bell had a season-high four saves, all in the first half, while freshman goalkeeper Sarah Scheller contributed one save in the second half of her collegiate debut. Delaware's Megan Allen notched a singe save.

Stanford plays the third of a season-opening five-game homestand with a non-conference game against Iowa on Friday, September 2 (1:00 pm, PT).
