Stanford, Calif. - The Iowa Hawkeyes scored two goals in the first ten minutes of play on the way to a 3-1 victory over the Cardinal. Kara Zappone scored Iowa's first goal at 10:37 off of a penalty corner, while Kadi Sickel scored unassisted at 10:45. Debbie Birrell tallied the Hawkeyes' final goal at 48:28. Sophomore Jess Zutz scored her second season and seventh career goal when she scored unassisted at the end of the first half. Zutz led the Cardinal with four shots, followed by freshman Caroline Hussey with two shots.

"This was the best offense we've seen them play," said head coach Lesley Irvine. "We made some changes at the half and we're continuing to get better each game. We took some big steps forward today, creating offensive opportunities, some of which we didn't capitalize on. We're pleased to have competed so well. Madison Bell really stepped up; we were pleased with her aggressiveness in the goal."

Sophomore goalkeeper Bell notched a career-high five saves for the Cardinal, including three early in the first period. Lissa Munley recorded three saves for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa tallied 11 penalty corners, six in the first half, while Stanford earned four.

Stanford continues its five-game homestand with a non-conference game against Syracuse on Sunday, September 4 (11:00 am, PT) and against Michigan State on Monday, September 5 (10:00 am, PT).
