No. 23 Stanford Falls to Second-Ranked North Carolina at the USF Tournament

San Francisco, Calif. - No. 2 North Carolina claimed the 2005 City by the Bay Classic title by defeating No. 23 Stanford, 4-0, today at Negoesco Stadium. Stanford is now 2-2-1 on the season, while North Carolina improved to 6-0-0 on the year.

The Cardinal kept the Tar Heels scoreless for the first 28 minutes of the match, until freshman Yael Averbuch netted an unassisted goal off a free kick. Junior Heather O'Reilly scored her eighth goal of the season at the 33:43 mark off an assist from senior Kacey White to bring the score to 2-0. North Carolina's Lori Chalupny scored the squad's third goal of the half at the 42nd minute, and senior defender Kendall Fletcher netted the final goal of the contest in the 52nd minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Alex Gamble picked up five saves in 66 minutes and sophomore Erica Holland added another two saves to close out the match.

Stanford seniors Leah Tapscott and Hayley Hunt were both honored as part of the all-tournament team, with Tapscott earning a nod as one of the top offensive players and Hunt being honored for her defense.

Stanford will be headed to the Tennessee Tournament next weekend, where the Cardinal will face the Lady Vols on Friday and No. 14 Texas A&M on Sunday.
