Stanford, Calif. - The San Francisco men's soccer team edged Stanford 1-0 this afternoon at Maloney Field in a non-conference game. The Cardinal drop to 1-4-1 on the season while the Dons improve to 2-2-1.
USF outshot Stanford 15-5 for the game with 10 of the shots coming in the first half. The Cardinal notched four of their five shots in the first half as well.
Don Rob Valentino started the winning play, passing the ball to Aaron Chandler. Chandler shot the ball past Stanford goalkeeper Josh Nesbitt, but it struck the left post and rebounded in front of the goal, where Valentino blasted it home at 19:28.
Freshman goalkeeper Josh Nesbit played all 90 minutes in goal and tallied six saves on the afternoon for Stanford. Galen Thompson led the squad with two shots on goal.
The Cardinal are back in action next weekend, hosting the Stanford Nike Classic, Sept. 23 and 25 at Maloney Field. SU will take on UAB on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Army on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
