Box Score

Stanford, Calif. - No. 14 Stanford improved to 1-1 on the season with a 5-0 victory over San Jose State tonight at Maloney Field, while the Spartans dropped to 0-4 on the year. The Cardinal took a 1-0 lead into halftime after senior Leah Tapscott scored the game-winner in the 40th minute, but the second half saw the Cardinal offense reach the back of the net four times, giving the Cardinal its largest margin of victory since Stanford defeated Marquette by the same score last September at the Santa Clara Tournament.

Stanford took the lead at 39:23, when Tapscott took a pass from Lindsey Hunt at midfield and challenged up to the box to slip the ball in the cage past San Jose State's Adrienne Herbst. After halftime, Stanford returned to the field and junior Shari Summers converted a free kick just outside the penalty box for the insurance goal in the 52nd minute. Ten minutes later, senior Martha West rocketed a penalty kick past Herbst to put the Cardinal up 3-0. In the 73rd minute, freshmen Austinn Freeman and Hillary Heath teamed up in the box to put Stanford ahead by four, and with less than nine minutes to play, West fed the ball into Lizzy George, who converted the pass for Stanford's fifth goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Alex Gamble made her second start in goal and picked up three saves in 73 minutes. Sophomore Erica Holland stepped in for the final 17 minutes and posted one save as the two combined for the first Stanford shutout of the season. Herbst recorded three saves allowed four goals in 73 minutes, while back-up keeper Erin Lavey tallied one save and one goal allowed.

Stanford out-shot the Spartans 14-6 on the night and earned nine corner kicks to San Jose State's zero.

Stanford will be on the road for most of the month, as the Cardinal will play its next three games at the University of San Francisco (Sunday vs. the Lady Dons, Sept. 9 vs. No. 13 Illinois, Sept. 11 vs. No. 2 North Carolina) before heading east for the Tennessee Tournament and a match at the United States Naval Academy. Sunday's match against San Francisco is set to kick off at 1 p.m.
