Stanford Nets a 2-1 Victory Over Navy

Sept. 22, 2005

Box Score

Annapolis, Md. - Stanford (4-3-1) notched a 2-1 victory over Navy (6-2-2) tonight at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on the campus of the United States Naval Academy. Tonight's game will be broadcast on CSTV this Sunday at 5 p.m.

The Cardinal's lone fifth-year senior, Martha West, put Stanford ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute, and the squad carried that lead into halftime before freshman Marisa Abegg put the Cardinal up 2-0 in the 60th minute when her ball hooked into the goal and caught the inside of the right post for her first collegiate goal.

Twenty-nine seconds later, Navy's Meggie Curran brought the Mids within one, scoring her sixth goal of the season off a free kick. But neither team could find the back of the net again tonight, on an extremely windy night along the Severn River.

Stanford out-shot Navy 13-4 on the night to earn its fourth victory of the season, while sophomore Erica Holland picked up her first start in goal, allowing just one goal in 90 minutes.

Stanford will return to action next week, when the Cardinal plays host to Santa Clara, Oakland and Colorado College in the Stanford Nike Invitational presented by Hilton Garden Inn Mountain View. Stanford will face off against the Broncos next Friday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m., after a 5 p.m. match-up between Oakland and Colorado College.
