Stanford, Ca - The third-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team recorded its 12th straight win with a 30-22, 31-29, 30-26 victory over 13th-ranked UCLA in a Pac-10 match Saturday night before a season-high crowd of 3,362 fans at Maples Pavilion. The victory was also the ninth straight win over the Bruins dating back to the 2001 season.
Freshman outside hitter Cynthia Barboza led the Stanford attack with 21 kills, six digs and two blocks. Kristin Richards added 19 kills and 12 digs.
Stanford dominated game one jumping to an 11-3 lead, and continued the eight point margin at 23-15. The Bruins managed to cut the Stanford lead to 25-20, but two kills by Kristin Richards helped a 4-0 Stanford run that gave the home team a 29-20 advantage. A kill by Cynthia Barboza ended the game (30-22).
Stanford started quickly in game two with a 4-1 lead. But at 10-6, the Bruins began its first sustained rally of the match with a 9-4 run that gave UCLA a 15-14 margin, its first lead of the match. Stanford took the lead for good in the game at 18-17, and expanded the margin to six points at 27-21. At 29-24, UCLA scored five straight points to tie the match. However, Stanford captured the game (31-29) on a kill by freshman middle blocker Foluke Akinradewo and a hitting error by the Bruins.
In game three, Stanford built a 15-10 lead, and expanded the margin to seven points at 18-11. UCLA cut the Cardinal lead to two points at 21-19, but Stanford built the lead back to five points at 29-24. The game (30-26) and the match ended on a kill by junior middle blocker Lizzie Suiter.
Stanford travels to Oregon State (Sept. 29, 7:00 p.m.) and Oregon (Sept. 30, 7:00 p.m.).
