Stanford, Calif. - In the first game of the Stanford Nike Invitational at Maloney Field this afternoon, Oakland posted a 2-1 victory over Colorado College. Oakland is now 4-4-1 on the year, while Colorado College falls to 6-3-3 this season.
After a quiet first half, Oakland's Kristi Swaving headed the ball in off of Kristi Mitchell's corner kick to give the Golden Grizzlies the lead in the 57th minute. Eleven minutes later, a loose ball came into the net to give Oakland a 2-0 lead from the own goal.
Colorado College kept pressuring and in the 78th minute, the Tigers found their way onto the scoreboard, as Katlin Okamoto converted a free kick into a goal.
Oakland goalie Jessica Howard picked up five saves on the day, while Tigers' keeper Geneva Sills recorded a pair of saves.
The Stanford Nike Invitational will continue on Sunday, as Santa Clara faces off against Oakland at 11 a.m., and Stanford takes on Colorado College at 1:30 p.m.
