San Francisco, Calif. - The 14th-ranked Stanford women's soccer team tied Illinois this evening 1-1 in double overtime at the USF Tournament at Negoesco Stadium. The Cardinal are now 2-1-1 overall, while the Fighting Illini are 2-1-2.
The two teams were held scoreless in the first half and most of the second half until Illinois got on the board with a deflected shot by Eva Strickland (assist Jessica Bayne) at 76:33.
With their backs against the wall, senior midfielder Leah Tapscott answered for the Cardinal (2-1-1) at 89:25 to force overtime - punching in a feed from junior midfielder Rachel Buehler into an open net.
Neither team got a shot on goal in the two overtime periods. For the game, Illinois outshot Stanford seven to four. Cardinal goalie Alex Gamble recorded two saves on the evening while Illinois' Lindsey Carstens also picked up two.
Stanford is back in action on Sunday at the USF Tournament with a game against No. 2 North Carolina at 2:30 p.m.
