Stanford, Calif. - The Cardinal picked up a victory over Loyola Marymount, 10-3, led by seniors Peter Varellas and Thomas Hopkins with three goals each. Fourth-ranked Stanford improves to 9-2 for the season.
Senior driver Varellas scored early in the first quarter to put the Cardinal in the lead. Freshman William Hindel-Katel and junior Marcello Pantuliano both scored near the end of the first quarter to put Stanford ahead, 3-0.
Hopkins scored his first goal of the game with 6:37 to go in the second quarter, reaching around Loyola Marymount goalkeeper Ian Elliot to score. Loyola's Ben Easton put the Lions on the board with a goal right before the end of the first half.
Varellas scored his second goal of the game to start the second half, putting Stanford ahead, 5-1. Varellas scored again off of a drive with four minutes to go in the third quarter, tallying his 25th goal of the season. Hopkins put the Cardinal ahead, 7-1, scoring off of a drive to the goal. Loyola's Endre Rex-Kiss scored an impressive shot with two minutes left in the third quarter, stealing the ball during transition and reversing it into the goal.
Matt Reynold scored again for the Lions with 5:38 remaining in the game. Hopkins followed with his third goal and 26th season goal. Freshman driver Chris Jacobson scored his fourth goal of the season off of a drive, pausing in front of Elliot before lobbing in a goal. Hindel-Katel scored Stanford's final goal with 1:24 remaining, his 21st goal of the season.
Stanford goalie Sandy Hohener played the first half of the game making four saves, and Beau Stockstill closed out the second half in goal with two saves.
Stanford and Loyola Marymount will now head to the NorCal tournament this weekend at Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex and Maramonte High School's Bill Brown Aquatics Center. The tournament includes16 teams, 15 of which are ranked in the nation's top-20. Every team in the top-10 will be represented at the NorCal tournament.
Stanford plays its first game on Saturday at 10:20 am, versus #16 Air Force Academy. The game will be held at the Bill Brown Aquatics Center.
