Stanford, Calif. - Stanford scored three goals in the first half to top Longwood (4-9, 1-2) at home. Fr. Caroline Hussey, Liz Robinson and Julia Drewes each scored a goal for the Cardinal.
Hussey put Stanford in the lead early, scoring unassisted at 9:31. Hussey now leads the team in scoring with six goals. Robinson scored again at 19:07, assisted by Sr. Lyndsay Erickson. Drewes sank a penalty shot at 21:43 to put the Cardinal ahead, 3-0.
"We were happy to get a conference win today," said head coach Lesley Irvine. "We came out strong and scored three goals early. Our focus from here will be connecting on our offensive opportunities."
Stanford took an impressive 40 shots, including 23 in the first half, while holding Longwood shotless. Jr. Aska Sturdevan led the Cardinal in shooting with 10 shots, followed by Robinson with seven shots. Zutz and Drewes also contributed six shots each.
The Cardinal earned 18 penalty corners, tallying nine in each quarter. Longwood was awarded one penalty corner in the second half.
Goalkeeper Avanell Schmitz tallied 17 saves for the Lancers, including nine in the second half.
Stanford will take a break from conference play with the annual Alumnae Game on Saturday, October 22 (1:00 pm). The Cardinal will return to action at home versus California on Saturday, October 29 (1:00 pm).
