Stanford Places Third In Competitive NorCal Tournament

Oct. 16, 2005

Berkeley, Calif. - Fourth-ranked Stanford (12-3) took third place in the NorCal tournament hosted by Cal this weekend. After Saturday's two wins against #16 Air Force Academy and #5 UC San Diego, the Cardinal fell to second-ranked USC Sunday morning in a 10-9 loss, reminiscent to that of the SoCal tournament's championship match just last month. The loss to USC sent Stanford into the third-place game to take on top-ranked UCLA, the defending NorCal tournament champion.

After the first quarter, the two teams were head to head with one point apiece, but UCLA took charge in the second quarter outscoring Stanford 2-0. With comeback determination, Stanford tied up the game at the end of the third quarter by scoring three goals, and ended the match outscoring UCLA 2-1 in the fourth, final score: Stanford 6, UCLA 5.

Stanford senior Peter Varellas had three goals to lead the Cardinal's victory, while Michael Bury had two, and Marcello Pantuliano scored one. Sandy Hohener played a great game at goal with 10 saves to help defeat the Bruins.

Michael Bury's seven goals on the tournament put him on the top of the Cardinal scorers, followed closely by Varellas with six goals, and J.J. Garton with five goals. Sandy Hohener had 30 saves in the final three games of the tournament, James Sandman had 10 saves in the first of Stanford's games.

Stanford travels to Long Beach State next Saturday, October 22, at 12:00PM. The Cardinal returns home the next weekend to play UCLA on Saturday October 29, and Pepperdine, October 30. The games will begin at 11:00AM and 12:00PM respectively.
