Stanford, Calif. - Jr. Valentina Godfrid scored three goals in an exciting matchup, including the gamewinner in overtime, to lead the Bears to a 3-2 victory over the Cardinal. So. Jess Zutz and Fr. Caroline Hussey each scored in regulation for Stanford.
Godfrid gave California the early lead at 7:41 with a goal during a penalty corner, assisted by Teela Crosthwaite. In the tenth minute, Zutz broke away from the defense and paused in front of the net, dishing the ball to Hussey for the goal. Hussey's goal was her seventh of the season. Stanford and Cal headed into halftime tied, 1-1.
In the second half, Zutz gave Stanford the lead when she scored in front of the net on a breakaway, assisted by Jr. Julia Drewes. Godfrid scored again at 45:53 during a penalty corner, assisted by Jessica Bird. California had possession in front the net in the final seconds of regulation, but could not get a shot off.
Godfrid scored her third goal of the day in the first 30 seconds of overtime to give Cal the 3-2 victory. Godfrid scored on a drive to the net, assisted by Alana Smith. Godfrid currently leads the NorPac conference in scoring with 25 goals.
"Today was an unbelievable game of field hockey", said head coach Lesley Irvine. "The game was very competitive and could have gone either way. It's hard to lose a game when you have played so well."
The Bears out shot the Cardinal, 14-8, lead by Godfrid with four shots. Zutz led the Cardinal with five shots.
California earned three penalty corners, including two in the first half, scoring off of two corners.
Stanford goalkeeper Madison Bell earned six saves, including five in the second half. Bell has tallied 52 saves this season.
The Cardinal returns to the turf Monday for its final NorPac regular season contest of the year versus Radford. The action begins at 1:00 pm, PT on the Varsity Field Hockey Turf.
