No. 3 North Carolina Tops Stanford, 4-0

Winston-Salem, N.C. - No. 3 North Carolina (9-2) pulled ahead early with three goals in the first half to beat the Cardinal, 4-0. Jr. Rachel Dawson scored the Tar Heels' first goal of the game at 3:04, assisted by Sr. Naomi Weatherald during a penalty corner. So. Heather Kendall scored at 25:18 off of another penalty corner, also assisted by Weatherald. Liz Morris scored a shot from across the circle before the close of the first half, assisted by Rachel Dawson.

Stanford nearly held the Tar Heels scoreless during the second half until Fr. Kate Scholl scored in the last minute of the game from the center of the cage. Scholl's goal was her third of the season.

"North Carolina is a great team," said head coach Lesley Irvine, "But we came out timid. During the second half we really stepped up our play, but we were unable to convert any offensive opportunities. It was a confidence booster to come out in the second half and almost hold them scoreless."

North Carolina out shot Stanford, 18-6, taking 11 shots in the first half of the game. Dawson led the Tar Heels with six shots, followed by So. Alli Tanner with three shots. Fr. Bailey Richardson and Jr. Aska Sturdevan led the Cardinal with a pair of shots each. Stanford took five of its six shots during the second half.

The Tar Heels earned six penalty corners, scoring off of two corners early in the first half. Stanford tallied five penalty corners, including three in the second half.

In her fourth collegiate start, Fr. goalkeeper Sarah Scheller notched eight saves for the Cardinal, bringing her season total to 19. North Carolina goalkeeper Katy Tran recorded four saves, all in the second half.

The Cardinal remains in North Carolina for one more game versus No. 1 Wake Forest on Monday, October 10 (3:00 pm, ET). Stanford returns to The Farm to play Longwood on Saturday, October 15 (1:00 pm, PT).
