MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Brooke Smith had 15 points and six rebounds to lead No. 11 Stanford to a 69-28 season-opening victory Saturday over Long Island University in the semifinals of the Subway Classic tournament.
Candice Wiggins added 14 points and six rebounds for Stanford.
Sara Oblak led the Blackbirds with 10 points and nine rebounds. LIU shot a dismal 4-of-31 in the second half.
The Cardinal jumped to a 22-2 lead with only 7 minutes gone in the first half. Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer soon rested her starters, with no Cardinal player logging more than 23 minutes.
Stanford's defense produced 10 steals and 10 blocks. The Cardinal ran the fast break after nearly every rebound or steal in the first half en route to a 40-17 halftime lead.
