Stanford Defeats Pepperdine In MPSF First Round, 9-7

Los Angeles, CA - The Stanford Cardinal, seeded third in the MPSF tournament and ranked second in the nation, dropped sixth-seeded Pepperdine 9-7, in the first round of the conference championships at USC's McDonald Swim Stadium.

Pepperdine took the early lead, scoring the first two goals of the match, however Stanford came roaring back in the beginning of the second period. The Cardinal scored a 4-1 run in the second quarter and a 4-2 run in the third before the Waves put on a final effort with the only two goals in the fourth period. Their late efforts were no match with Stanford senior Peter Varellas' five goals on the afternoon.

The Cardinal will face UC Irvince in championship semifinal action tomorrow at 2:30pm. The Anteaters, seeded second in the tournament, defeated #7 Pacific in the first round this afternoon, 7-6, on Derason Barry's fifth goal of the match with just minutes remaining. UC Irvine upset Stanford earlier this season in a tough 8-5 loss, seeding the Anteaters ahead of the Cardinal in the MPSF tournament. The winner of this semifinal match will head into the Championship game Sunday at 3:00pm versus the winner of the Cal-USC semifinal match tomorrow afternoon.
