Berkeley, Calif. - Third-seeded Stanford fell to second-seeded California, 2-1, during the NorPac semifinal. Valentina Godfrid scored two goals for the Bears, including the game winner. Sr. co-captain Tammy Shuer scored her first goal of the season for the Cardinal.
Godfrid scored early to put the Golden Bears in the lead, netting a goal during a penalty corner in the 11th minute, assisted by Teela Crosthwaite and Jenna Long. Shuer tied the game with no time remaining in the first half during a penalty corner, assisted by Bailey Richardson.
The majority of the second half passed without either team scoring, until Godfrid netted a goal during a penalty corner at 63:37 to give the Bears the victory. Crosthwaite and Long assisted the goal.
"This was a disappointing loss, especially when we competed so well," said head coach Lesley Irvine. "All three games between Cal and Stanford have been phenomenal games of field hockey. Our girls played a great game and I'm very proud of them."
Stanford and California tied in shots, 5-5. Shuer, Richardson, Sturdevan, Hussey and Drewes all tallied a shot for the Cardinal. Godfrid led the Bears with four shots.
The Bears recorded six penalty corners, scoring on two corners. Stanford earned three penalty corners, including two in the first half.
California goalkeeper Veronica Sykes recorded three saves, including two in the first half.
"It was disappointing to lose because we wanted so badly to beat Cal today," said Sr. Missy Halliday. "We set goals for this game and even though we didn't win, we reached our goals. We didn't win but we played our game of field hockey today."
Stanford will return to Maxwell Family Field tomorrow at 10:00 am to play in the third place game against Radford.
