Corvallis, Ore. - Freshman Kelley Birch tallied her first collegiate goal this afternoon to help the Cardinal to a 1-0 victory over Oregon State. Stanford improves to 9-6-3 on the season with a 3-3-2 mark in the Pac-10, while Oregon State falls to 10-7-1 with a 3-4-1 record in conference play.
Birch netted the game winner in the 68th minute on an assist from junior Shari Summers, who had left the game in the first half after an injury, but returned for the second half after being cleared by the team trainer.
"Shari was upended in the first half, but it was a gutsy performance to come back on the field," noted head coach Paul Ratcliffe. "The whole team responded well under adverse conditions."
Stanford had control of the game, despite the rainy weather conditions, and fired of 15 shots to the Beavers' six. Freshman keeper Alex Gamble made her first appearance in goal in two weeks, picking up her seventh shutout of the year along with two saves.
Stanford will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, with a 1 p.m. match at Oregon. The Ducks host Cal tonight at 5 p.m.
