Redwood Shores, CA - Women's Crew kicked off its 2005 spring racing season in winning form. After a one week layoff from practice due to final examinations, the Cardinal competed against the University of British Columbia on a race course blown by high winds. The women's first varsity came off the line strong to gain a boat length lead in the first 500 meters and then hit a wall of wind just past the 1000 meter mark. At this point, the UBC crew fought back to within four seats of the Card pushing them in the final sprint. Stanford finished with a one boat length lead.
The second varsity eight started strong seeing their one length led at the 500 meter point open up to an open water lead at the halfway point when the UBC boat entered into the Cardinal's lane. Despite being hit by the UBC shell the Cardinal pushed ahead to win by over 20 seconds.
The novice four had the biggest test of the day with race times reaching nearly two minutes longer due to the strong head wind. The Cardinal rowed hard but were overpowered by the UBC boat.
