Stanford, Calif. - Six-ranked Stanford rallied behind a raucous, sold-out home crowd to beat California for the second straight week and capture first place at the Stanford Open. Led by three individual titles from sophomore David Sender, junior Alex Schorsch and senior Nate Downs, Stanford topped seventh-ranked California, 208.625-206.425. Nebraska rounded out the top three teams with 198.475. All Star 1, comprised of the top finishers from last night's club competition, posted a score of 195.700 to beat All Star 2 with 191.375 and Washington with 181.450.
Sender claimed the all-around victory with 51.625, also posting three more top-three finishes. Jason Chu from All Star 1 was the all-around runner-up with 50.625 and Nebraska's Jason Wassung was third with 49.550.
Stanford claimed individual titles on three events, including Sender's victory on the vault with a score of 9.450. Downs posted a score of 9.259 to win the high bar, followed by teammate Dylan Carney for the second-place tie with 8.950. On the still rings, Scorsch nabbed an impressive 9.650 to top Washington's Kevin Perkins with a 9.250 and California's Tyler Block with a 9.200. Sender and junior Carney finished in second and third place on the floor exercise with scores of 8.950 and 8.650, respectively. Sender claimed another top-three finish by earning second on the parallel bars with an 8.975.
The Cardinal returns to action in Las Vegas for the Winter Cup on February 2. Stanford and California face off again in Palo Alto on Saturday, February 11 (7:00 pm).
