Solomon Welch Sets School Record In Triple Jump

Seattle, Wa - Solomon Welch, Erica McLain and Teresa McWalters were among six Stanford winners during Saturday's action at the Washington Indoor Invitational.

Welch, a senior, easily broke the school record in the triple jump with an NCAA provisional mark of 51-5 1/2 (15.68m). Welch's effort easily broke the old record of 50-2 (15.29m) set by Phil Cannon in 1986. McLain, the American junior record in the outdoor triple jump, opened her 2006 indoor season with a victory in the triple jump. McLain qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a winning effort of 44-1 1/2 (13.45m) which is the second-best effort in Stanford history. McLain holds the school record at 45-7 1/2 (13.90m) which was set last year at the Washington Indoor Invitational. Teresa McWalters not only won the 3000 meters but also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 9:09.19, the fifth-best time in school history. Other Stanford winners included Janice Davis who nearly set a school record in the 60 meters with a prelim time of 7.33, just short of her school record of 7.31 set last year at the Washington Indoor Invitational. Davis won the 60 meter final with a time of 7.36, which is an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Stanford went 1-2-3 in the 60 meters with Chauntae Bayne finishing second in an NCAA provisional time of 7.37 followed by Jakki Bailey in third (7.51). Bayne's time is third-best in school history.

Two other Stanford athletes scored victories on Saturday. Freshman Alana Walker won the 200 meters with a time of 24.53 which is sixth-best in school history. Graeme Hoste won the pole vault with a career-best mark of 17-0 3/4 (5.20m, #2 all-time at Stanford). Hoste's mark is also an NCAA provisional qualifying effort.
