Box Score

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford women's lacrosse team kicked off the 2006 season with a solid 18-9 win over MPSF rival Oregon on Saturday afternoon at Maloney Field. In an impressive showing, 11 different players contributed goals to the Cardinal effort. Stanford is now 1-0 on the season and 1-0 in MPSF conference play. With the win, head coach Michele Uhlfelder extended her conference winning streak to 32 consecutive games.

The Cardinal came out in the first half with energy, overwhelming the Ducks with five goals in the first eight minutes of play. Junior midfielder Liz Piselli started off the scoring for the Cardinal with her first of four goals on the afternoon. Piselli led all scorers in the match with four goals and two assists.

Oregon freshman Ilsa van den Berg ended the Duck drought by netting her first career goal in the eleventh minute. Stanford was not fazed, however, and continued its scoring run with four more consecutive goals.

At the end of the second half, the Ducks made a run as four players added goals for Oregon in the final three minutes of play. The teams went to the locker room with the Cardinal leading by a score of 10-5.

Stanford came out in the second half, however, with renewed energy. The Cardinal opened the period on another scoring run as they notched five more consecutive goals.

The Ducks were led in scoring by van den Berg as well as sophomores Kate Fleming andTheresa Waldron, each with two goals. Jen May, Lindsay Killian and Alison Leiner each notched a goal for the Ducks as well.

The Cardinal had five players with multiple goals on the afternoon. In addition to Piselli's four, Bis Fries, Megan Burker, Sarah Bach and Bri Ned all had two goals a piece. Jamie Nesbitt, Daphne Patterson, Bryanne Gilkinson, Megan McClain, Jessica Verrilli and Anna Brown each contributed a score as well. Of note, Burker's second goal, scored in the 45th minute, marked her 100th career goal. The senior is now one goal out of fifth place on the Cardinal career scoring chart.

Stanford returns to action on the road next Saturday in a 12:00 p.m. match-up with Bay Area rival Cal. The game will be a rematch of last year's MPSF Tournament final, in which the Cardinal defeated the Bears 12-9.
