Feb. 18, 2006

Santa Barbara, Calif. - Third-ranked Stanford built an early 4-0 lead and held off #11 UCSB, 8-5 in MPSF action on Saturday. With the win, the Cardinal improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the MPSF, while the Gauchos dropped to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in the MPSF.

A pair of goals from junior Katie Hansen (Coronado, CA) and single goals from freshman Lauren Silver (Long Beach, CA) and senior Scotti Shafer (Carlsbad, CA) put the Cardinal up 4-0 by the end of the 1st quarter. From there, Stanford's defense, capped by goalkeeper Meridith McColl's 15 saves, successfully staved off rally attempts by the Gauchos, who scored 5 goals to Stanford's 4 over the remaining three periods. Stanford led by as much as 5 goals with the score 6-1 in the 2nd and went into halftime with a 6-2 lead. McColl (Mission Viejo, CA) posted 5 saves each in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

The Cardinal were led by 3 goals each from Hansen and Silver, while Shafer and senior Laurel Champion (Palo Alto, CA) each added a goal. With her 3rd 3-goal performance of the young season, Silver is quickly developing into one of Stanford's most potent offensive weapons, as she now leads the team with 15 goals. Hansen steps into second on the team with 8 goals this season.

The Gauchos got strong efforts from freshman Amanda Tipton and junior Allie Carkin, who scored 2 goals apiece, while junior Sarah Kovach chipped in with a goal. UCSB goalie Rosey Redaelli finished with 7 saves.
