Northridge, Calif. - The No. 3 Stanford Cardinal posted a strong offensive effort today to beat the No. 19 Cal State Northridge Matadors, 11-4 in MPSF action. Junior Katie Hansen (Coronado, CA) led the way with 3 goals as Stanford improved their record to 6-1 overall, 3-0 in the MPSF. The Matadors fell to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the MPSF.
Stanford's Lauren Silver scored the match's first goal just 32 seconds into play, while Hansen added 2 scores and senior Scotti Shafer (Carlsbad, CA) chipped in with another to make it 4-0 after the 1st period. Hansen and sophomore Jacquelyn Gauthier (Irvine, CA) tallied scores in the 2nd to make it 6-0 before CSUN got on the board with a goal by senior Erica Bonetti.
The Cardinal added to their 6-1-halftime lead to make it 8-1 after 3 periods with goals from Silver and senior Nancy El-Sakkary (Dollar des Ormeaux, Quebec). Both squads added 3 goals to their total in the 4th period, with Stanford getting scores from El-Sakkary, sophomore Megan May (San Diego, CA) and freshman Jessica Steffens (Danville, CA). Sophomore Allison Brookes, senior Heather van Hemert, and Bonetti scored the 3 4th period goals for CSUN.
Goalkeeper Meridith McColl (Mission Viejo, CA) tallied 5 saves for Stanford, while the Matadors' Graziella Caredda had 10 saves.
Silver, a freshman from Long Beach, CA, brought her team-leading goals total to 17, while Hansen's 3 goals improved her second place total to 11.
Stanford will next participate in the Santa Barbara Tournament in Santa Barbara, Calif. next weekend, February 25 and 26, where 15 of the nation's highest-ranked squads are slated to compete.
