Palm Springs, Calif. - Stanford topped Maryland, 8-5, in the second day of the Palm Springs Classic. Freshmen Maddy Coon and Missy Penna hit multiple-RBI home runs for the Cardinal. Penna struck out nine batters in six and a half innings in the circle.
The Cardinal pulled out to an early lead in the first inning. Coon got on base with a single up the middle and scored off of a double by sophomore first baseman Michelle Smith.
Terrapin hitter Jennifer Belak got on base in the third inning with a double down the leftfield line. Meghan Booth then knocked home Belak with a single up the right baseline, tying the game at 1-1.
On a full count in the fourth inning, Coon hit a single over the third baseman's head to score sophomore rightfielder Anna Beardman. Stanford closed out the fourth inning ahead, 2-1.
The Cardinal hitters came alive in the sixth inning. Junior second baseman Lindsay Key got on base with a single to left center, and senior shortstop Lauren Lappin followed with another single to reach first. Coon then stepped up and hit a home run over the right field fence to score all three. Smith knocked a single to left field to get to first and junior leftfielder Jackie Rinehart reached with a single to the pitcher. Penna then slammed a home run over the left field fence, also scoring Smith and Rinehart. Stanford ended the inning ahead, 8-1.
The Terrapins continued to fight in the top of the seventh inning. Whitney Reigel hit a double down the leftfield line to score Amanda D'Attilio and Rachel Greyson. Lindsay Klien later hit a double to left field to score Belak and Reigel. Penna finished the inning with a strike out and Stanford ended the game up, 8-5.
In six and a half innings, Penna struck out nine batters, allowed four hits and walked only two batters. Penna improves to 7-1 on the season.
Coon was 3-4 at the plate with two runs and four RBI, collecting her fifth home run of the season and second of the tournament. Lappin was 3-4 with one run and Penna was 1-4 with one run and three RBI, as well as her second home run of the season.
Stanford continues play today against No. 4 Texas at 6:00 pm.
