Seattle, Wa - Competing in her first long jump competition of the 2006 indoor season, Erica McLain captured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title for a second straight year on Friday night at the University of Washington.
McLain, who gained All-America honors last year, won the competition with a career-best mark of 20-10 3/4 (6.37m). That mark is also second-best in school history. McLain's effort also met the NCAA provisional standard.
Stanford also won the men's and women's distance medley relay titles. The Cardinal women won the league title for a fourth straight season. This time the team of Amanda Trotter, Ashley Freeman, Arianna Lambie and Katy Trotter ran the distance in a time of 11:11.46, the eighth-best time in school history. The men's team of Russell Brown, Michael Garcia, Joaquin Chapa and Garrett Heath beat the competition in a time of 9:38.87. Both winning times met the NCAA provisional standard.
Sophomore Anna McFarlane set a school record in the pole vault with an effort of 13-1 (3.99m). That broke the old mark of 13-0 1/4 (3.97m) set by Kathleen Donoghue in 2002. McFarlane's effort was also an NCAA provisional mark.
After the first day of competition, the Cardinal women (the three-time defending MPSF champion) reside in second place with 36 points. Arizona State leads with 54 points. In men's competition, Stanford is third with 22 points. Washington leads with 41 points while California is second with 26 points.
The second and final day of competition will be held on Saturday.
