Stanford, Calif - The second-ranked Cardinal capitalized on strong defense and a balanced scoring attack to cruise past Princeton 12-3 at the Belardi Pool on a rainy Friday evening.
In a game that saw the Cardinal take a commanding seven to one halftime lead, Stanford received goals from eight different players. Senior Scotti Shafer (Carlsbad, CA) and Junior Christina Hewko (Newport Beach, CA) led the Cardinal attack with three goals apiece. Additionally, Freshman Lauren Silver (Long Beach, CA) capitalized on a fourth quarter four-meter shot to increase her team lead to an impressive twenty-nine goals on the season.
The Cardinal (13-3, 6-1 MPSF) came out strong, only allowing one shot in the first quarter while netting four goals. Goalie Meridith McColl (Mission Viejo, CA) had a relatively quiet night, only needing to make five saves for the victory.
Princeton (11-4) had come into Friday's match with a two game winning streak and impressive play as of late, however Stanford's stifling defensive proved to be too much for the Tigers.
Friday's victory by the Cardinal built on their impressive season thus far. Stanford's only three losses have come against the top-ranked USC Women of Troy. Stanford will travel to the University of Hawaii on Tuesday, March 28, for a spring break game before returning home next Sunday, April 2 for a showdown with Cal at 7:00pm.
