No. 2 Stanford Beats No. 5 Hawai'i, 12-6

March 28, 2006

Honolulu - Junior Katie Hansen scored a season-high 6 goals to help No. 2 Stanford hand No. 5 Hawai'i its first home loss of the season with a 12-6 victory on a rain-soaked Tuesday afternoon. The win improved Stanford's record to 14-3 overall and 7-1 in the MPSF. Hawai'i, meanwhile, dropped to 10-7 and 5-3.

Hansen put the Cardinal up early with 2 scores within the first few minutes of the match. UH's Iefke Van Belkum brought the Rainbow Wahine back within 1 with a goal right before the end of the first period.

Stanford then pulled away in the second frame with an impressive 6 goals, including another pair of goals by Hansen, giving the Cardinal an 8-3 halftime lead.

The two teams played a tight second half with Stanford scoring 4 goals to UH's 3, but the Rainbow Wahine could not overcome Stanford's early lead.

In addition to Hansen's 6 goals, freshman Lauren Silver (Long Beach, CA) netted 3 goals of her own, while senior Scotti Shafer (Carlsbad, CA) and junior Christina Hewko (Newport Beach, CA) scored twice and once, respectively.

Silver leads the team with 33 goals on the season, but she now holds only a narrow lead over Hansen, who has 30.

Junior goalkeeper Meridith McColl (Mission Viejo, CA) posted 6 saves.

Up next, Stanford hosts No. 6 Cal in a conference match showdown at 7:00 PM on Sunday, April 2. The two teams have already met twice this season, with the Cardinal taking both matches.
