Malibu, Calif. - No. 1 Stanford improved to 17-0 on the season with a 4-3 win over No. 8 Pepperdine at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu this afternoon. The Waves fell to 14-3 on the season, while the Cardinal extended its overall win streak to 72-straight matches.
Stanford started the day by winning the doubles point, with the top-ranked duo of Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey posting an 8-5 victory over 22nd-ranked pair, Merve Asimgil and Sylvia Kosakowski. Celia Durkin and Amber Liu clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win over No. 25 Bianca Dulgheru and Eva Dickes before the Waves scored an 8-6 win on court three.
Stanford took a 3-0 lead with No. 31 Durkin notching a 6-0, 6-0 victory on court six and No. 6 Theresa Logar adding a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the three-spot. But the Waves came back with upsets on courts five, one and two, knotting Stanford and Pepperdine at 3-3.
On court four, 13th-ranked Anne Yelsey and Natalie Braverman were in the third set, after Yelsey dropped the first, 3-6, and won the second, 6-3. Braverman came from behind to tie the set at 4 games each, but Yelsey won the next two games for the 6-4 victory to clinch the Stanford victory.
Stanford will be on the road again on Friday, as the Cardinal heads north to Eugene, Ore., for a 1:30 p.m. match-up with Oregon. Stanford will be back at the Taube Tennis Center next weekend, as the Cardinal hosts UCLA and USC on April 7 and 8.
