Alice Barnes Advances to the Semifinals in Singles and Doubles

Ojai, Calif. - Stanford's Alice Barnes continued her success at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, advancing to the semifinals in both singles and doubles for the third time in her career. In the Pac-10 Invitational, freshman Jessica Nguyen is making a strong start, advancing to the singles semis.

In the Pac-10 Championship singles draw, fourth-ranked Barnes was the lone Cardinal player to advance to the semifinals with a three-set victory over 25th-ranked Laura Gordon of UCLA. She will take on 10th-ranked Amanda Fink of USC tomorrow. This is Barnes's third-straight appearance in the Pac-10 Championship semifinals. The Cardinal's other top-ranked players, No. 6 Theresa Logar and No. 9 Anne Yelsey both fell in the quarters to ranked players.

In the Pac-10 Championship doubles draw, Lejla Hodzic and Jessica Nguyen won their opening round match but Cal's 11th-ranked duo of Suzi Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor knocked the Cardinal pair out, 8-6. Top-ranked Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey earned a first-round bye and then posted an 8-6 victory over Elizabeth Lumpkin and Alex McGoodwin to earn a place in the semifinals. The defending Pac-10 Doubles Champion pair of Barnes and Yelsey will take on Arizona State's 21st-ranked tandem of Roxanne Clarke and Kady Pooler tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. Barnes also won the Pac-10 title with Stanford graduate Erin Burdette in 2004.

49th-ranked Whitney Deason posted a win in the Pac-10 Championship singles back draw with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Whitney Peterson of USC.

In the Pac-10 Invitational singles draw, 76th-ranked Nguyen posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over UCLA's Elizabeth Lumpkin to advance to tomorrow's semifinals against Cal's Marion Ravelojaona. Their match is set to begin at 11 a.m.

In the Pac-10 Invitational doubles draw, both sets of Cardinal entrants were knocked out, as Deason and Joanna Kao drew a first-round bye but lost in the quarterfinals and Megan Doheny and Jessica Leck dropped out in the Round of 16.
