Austin, Tx - Josh Hustedt, a sophomore from Sandy, Utah, stands in fifth place after day one (Wednesday) in the decathlon at the 79th annual Texas Relays.
Hustedt tallied 3,751 points in five events (100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meters). Hustedt began the day with his best event, the 100 meters, where his time of 11.04wa translated into 852 points. Hustedt followed with 838 points in the long jump (23-3 1/2wa, 7.10m), 566 points in the shot put (37-2 1/2, 11.34m) and 767 points in the high jump (6-5, 1.96m). The day ended with 728 points in the 400 meters (51.93).
Trey Hardee of Texas won four of the five first-day decathlon events and leads 19 other competitors with 4,399 points.
On Thursday, the final five events in the decathlon will be contested in the 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1500 meters.
The heptathlon is also being contested, and Stanford freshman Lauren Stewart resides in ninth place with 3,186 points. Stewart began the day with 925 points in the 100 meter hurdles (14.38wa) followed by 806 points in the high jump (5-5 1/4, 1.66m), 570 points in the shot put (34-10 1/4, 10.62m) and 885 points in the 200 meters (25.02wa).
Ryanee Dupree, competing unattached, leads 21 other competitors after the first day with 3,426 points.
The final three events, the long jump, javelin and 800 meters will be contested on Thursday.
