Austin, Tx - Josh Hustedt, a sophomore from Sandy, Utah, recorded the seventh best effort in school history in the decathlon in finishing in fifth place among 17 competitors on Thursday at the 79th annual Texas Relays.
Hustedt, whose previous best was 5,727 points, tallied a two-day, ten-event total of 7,070 points, 70 points better than the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Hustedt collected 3,751 points during the first day of competition on Wednesday, and added another 3,319 points during Thursday's five events.
Hustedt began Thursday with a wind-aided time of 14.85 in the 110 meter hurdles. That was good enough for 868 points, the highest point total he achieved in any of the ten events during the two-day competition. Hustedt then scored 543 points in the discus with a throw of 111-4 (33.94m). That was followed by 819 points in the pole vault (15-5, 4.70m), 546 points in the javelin (154-6, 47.09m) and 543 points in the 1500 meters (5:02.99).
Trey Hardee of Texas won the decathlon with 8,465 points.
In the heptathlon, Stanford freshman Lauren Stewart finished tenth among 20 competitors with 5,110 points. Stewart's total is seventh-best in school history and beats the NCAA provisional qualifying standard by 110 points.
After a first day total of 3,186 points, Stewart added another 1,924 points in three events, the long jump, the javelin and the 800 meters. Stewart started the day with 789 points in a wind-aided effort of 19-0 1/4 (5.80m) in the long jump, followed by 461 points in the javelin (95-8, 29.17m) and 674 points in the 800 meters (2:31.55).
Julie Pickler of Washington State won the seven-event heptathlon with 5,734 points.
In the men's pole vault, freshman Donell Hill qualified for the NCAA Regionals with an effort of 16-6 3/4 (5.05m).
