Stanford Takes Third Place At NCAA Team Final

Norman, Okla. - Stanford Men's Gymnastics (26-6) finished third tonight in the NCAA Team Finals with a score of 218.375, behind champion Oklahoma (221.400) and runner-up Illinois (220.975). Penn State finished fourth behind the Cardinal with 215.125, California was fifth with 215.000 and Iowa was sixth with a score of 211.800. The third-place finish is Stanford's highest team performance in nearly a decade.

The Cardinal will advance six athletes to the Individual Event Finals in five events, with three Stanford gymnasts making the cut on the still rings. Sophomore Sho Nakamori, junior Alex Schorsch, junior Peter Derman, sophomore David Sender, junior Dylan Carney and senior Nate Downs will compete tomorrow night in at least one event each at the Individual Event Finals, beginning at 7:00 pm CT.

Stanford's season-long dominance on the still rings continued tonight as the Cardinal won the event with a team score of 37.700, followed by Oklahoma in second with 37.425. Schorsch tied for second with a score of 9.500, trailing event winner Jonathan Horton of Oklahoma with 9.700. Derman placed fourth with 9.475 and Sender tied for fifth with 9.425. Freshman Bryant Hadden rounded out the top ten with a score of 9.300.

The Cardinal finished second as a team on the floor exercise with a score of 36.900, behind Illinois with 36.925. Nakamori was Stanford's top finisher and lone qualifier on the event in fourth with a score of 9.450. Illinois' Justin Spring won the event with 9.750. Carney was 13th with 9.200, while Sender and senior Sean Doolan tied for 17th with 9.125.

On the vault, Stanford tied for second with Illinois, posting a score of 36.775. Oklahoma won the event with a team score of 37.850 and Michigan's Andrew DiGiore was the top individual with 9.700. Carney advanced to the individual final in seventh with a score of 9.350, as did Sender in eighth with 9.325.

Stanford was third on the high bar with a season-best score of 37.750, with Oklahoma winning the event with 38.200. Carney was just under his season best with a score of 9.625, earning fourth place to advance. Downs also advances in tenth with a score of 9.450. The Cardinal posted another season-best as a team on the parallel bars with a score of 36.425, good for fourth on the event. Illinois posted the top score with 37.975. Sender was the Cardinal's lone qualifier on the event in sixth with a score of 9.350. Shen also tied for 12th with a score of 9.200. The Cardinal finished sixth as a team on the pommel horse with a score of 32.825, with Illinois winning the event as a team (36.925).

Oklahoma's Horton won the all-around tonight with a score of 56.000 as the top ten advance to tomorrow night's final. Sender nabbed fifth for the Cardinal with 54.125 and Nakamori was seventh with 53.300.

The Cardinal qualifiers will return to action tomorrow night at 7:00 pm in the NCAA Individual Event Final. Sender will move on in the vault, parallel bars, and rings, while Nakamori will compete on the floor exercise. Carney will compete on the high bar and vault, while Downs advances on the high bar, Schorsch continues on the still rings and Derman qualifies on the still rings.
