Women in 2nd with 8 races to go

May 25, 2006

Charleston, SC - At the end of day two of the 3-day ICSA Women's Dinghy National Championship, the Stanford Cardinal sit in 2ndoverall. "It's been a dogfight out there," commented Head Coach JayKehoe of this year's regatta, hosted by College of Charleston and sailed in 420's in the current-laden waters of Patriot's Point, Charleston.

Freshman skipper Taylor Grimes has stepped up to sail B-Division for the Card at this event after A-Division skipper Caroline Young broke her clavicle two weeks ago, rendering her unable to compete. Taylor has sailed with veteran crew Becca Levin in all but four races.

Stronger wind meant Levin subbed out for heavier teammate, MarianaBeardsworth. In either combination Taylor has dominated B-Division,sitting 1st in B by over 20 points.

The competition has been tight in A-Division, hometown girls from Charleston lead the pack with a constant leadchanges for 2nd in A-Div. Sophomores Evan Brown and Carrie Denning have lead the charge for the Card in A, but some deep finishes prompted a switch to senior Liz Rountree and sophomore Sarah Schoknecht to jump in for a set of 2 races. When Rountree/Schok pulled a similar set, Brown/Denning returned. Jo Madsen swapped in for Denning in the last set today as the breeze built.

On Friday, racing begins at 10 am Eastern time. Four races will be sailed in each division. For up to the minute racing results, check out www.collegesailing.org
