Jonathan Pierce Advances In Steeplechase At NCAA Championships

Sacramento, Ca - Chauntae Bayne-Hackett (100, 200 meters), Janice Davis (100, 200 meters) and Erica McLain (long jump, triple jump) are three of 32 athletes who will compete in two events at the 2006 NCAA Track & Field Championships (June 7-10) at Sacramento State. And this trio of Stanford athletes didn't waste time on the first day (Wednesday) at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex.

McLain is competing in the long jump and triple jump. McLain began her long jump competition with an effort of 20-9 1/4 (6.33m) which was sixth-best in the 28-women field prelims. The final is slated for Thursday night (6:30 p.m. pt). McLain's participation in the triple jump starts on Friday (1:00 p.m. pt).

Bayne-Hackett began her efforts in the 200 meters on Thursday and her time of 23.42 moved her into Friday's semifinals (5:45 p.m. pt) along with Janice Davis who ran 23.17.

Jonathan Pierce ran the fourth-fastest 3000 meter steeplechase time (8:40.72) in school history to qualify for Saturday's final (2:20 p.m.).

Two rounds of competition are necessary to make the final in the women's 800 meters, and Ashley Freeman got off to a good start in the opening round. Freeman ran a season-best time of 2:06.45 to finish tenth among 16 runners to advance to Thursday's semifinals (4:50 p.m. pt).

More qualifying events are scheduled for Thursday. The list of Stanford people includes Sarah Hopping in the hammer, Chauntae Bayne-Hackett and Janice Davis in the 100 meters, Russell Brown and Rolf Steier in the 1500 meters, and Melissa Yunghans in the shot put. The only final event for Stanford is the 10,000 meters (8:00 p.m. pt) where Stanford has four competitors; Neftalem Araia, Brett Gotcher, Hari Mix and Jonathan Pierce.
