Stanford, Ca - A determined Stanford field hockey team fought from beginning to end, but the top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Maryland Terrapins scored a 4-1 victory on Sunday in a non-league game that was closer than the final score indicated.
Maryland scored their goals in bunches. At 10:54 of the first half, Maryland struck gold when Paula Infante, a three-time All-American, scored off an assist from Janneke van Leeuwen and Berber Rischen. Then at 13:30, the Terrapins scored again on an unassisted goal by Emily Trycinski.
Maryland outshot the Cardinal, 11-4, in the first half, and appeared to have the game in hand when Stanford scored at 55:43 in the second half. Aska Sturdevan rocketed a shot past Terrapin goalkeeper Kathryn Masson to cut the Maryland lead in half at 2-1. Both teams played even through the next 13 minutes, but then the visitors struck quick on goals by Nicole Muracco at 68:28 and 69:25.
Stanford goalkeeper Madison Bell faced 30 shots from the Maryland offense, and was credited with a career-high eleven saves. Her previous best was seven against Southwest Missouri State last year at the NorPac Championships.
Maryland upped its season record to 2-0 while Stanford fell to 1-1.
The competition doesn't get any easier for the Cardinal on their five-game home stand to open the 2006 season. On Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., Stanford hosts sixth-ranked American University at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf. Admission is free.
